Why location matters
Every request from a visitor's browser has to travel to your server and back. Data in fibre-optic cable travels at roughly two-thirds of the speed of light, so each 1,000 km of distance adds about 10 milliseconds to every round trip — before any real-world routing detours.
A single page load involves many round trips (DNS, connection setup, encryption, the page itself, then images, scripts and styles). A server on another continent can easily add a few hundred milliseconds to how quickly a page starts to appear.
The one rule: follow your audience
Choose the data center closest to most of your visitors — not closest to you, and not closest to your company's headquarters. Check your analytics for where your traffic actually comes from.

Data protection and residency
If you handle personal data of people in the European Union, keeping it on servers inside the EU can make GDPR compliance simpler. Our Finland and Bulgaria data centers are in the EU; the UK currently benefits from an EU adequacy decision for data transfers. Some industries and public-sector customers have their own data residency rules — check what applies to you.
Does location affect SEO?
Search engines don't rank sites by server location as such, but they do measure page speed and user experience. A server close to your audience helps pages load faster, and that does count. For multilingual sites, clear language and region signals (such as hreflang tags) matter far more than where the server is.
What if my visitors are worldwide?
- Host where the largest share of your visitors is.
- Put a CDN in front of your site to serve images, scripts and styles from locations near every visitor.
- Use caching so that most pages don't need a full round trip to your database.
How to test before you decide
- Ask friends or colleagues in your main markets to open your site, or use an online speed test from several locations.
- Compare the "time to first byte" (TTFB) — it shows how quickly the server starts answering.
